TODAY marks a double celebration for the Ukrainians in Penang as they celebrate the Independence Day of Ukraine and the opening of the Ukraine consulate in George Town, Penang.

Ukraine Ambassador to Malaysia Olexander Nechytaylo said Penang is an economic powerhouse that contributes to the nation’s economic development.

“From now on, Ukraine will have its own representation in Penang.

“We have opened a consulate in George Town.

“Although thousands of miles keep us apart; today, we have built a new ‘bridge’ between Ukraine and Malaysia. It is a bridge of warm friendship,” he said in his speech before the opening of the Ukraine consulate in Jalan Green Hall today.

Nechytaylo said the setting up of the consulate in Penang was a testament of Ukraine’s strong commitment to further develop and to expand its trade, investment and cultural corporation in Malaysia.

“I would like to thank newly appointed Ukraine honorary consul Datuk Seri Chuah Kim Seah and his team for putting this event together.

“I have full confidence he is the right man for the job, to open up a new chapter for bilateral relations between Ukraine and Malaysia,” he said.

Chuah thanked the guests for taking part in the opening ceremony.

Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy said the opening of the Ukraine consulate in Penang was an important occasion.

“We look forward to future, meaningful and a dynamic relationship with Ukraine,” he said.
