On January 17, 2012 the first inaugural international conference "Global movement of moderates" was launched in Kuala Lumpur. The representatives of 56 countries took part in this event. The delegation of Ukraine was headed by the Director of the National Institute for Strategic Studies of Ukraine Mr. A.Yermolayev.
The above mentioned international forum is held in Malaysia within the context of the current initiative by the Prime Minister of Malaysia Najib Tun Razak which he presented during the 65th session of the UN General Assembly in 2010 in order to avoid the identification by the majority of the world population of the of Islam as a religious movement connected tightly to extremism and terrorism.
Delivering the keynote speech to the conference, the Prime Minister of Malaysia said that the ground to a proper response to extremism and other challenges to the stability in the world should not be "violence" but the strengthening of the moderate voices among the representatives of Islam and Christianity, Buddhism and all other religions.
In this regard, he stressed on the Malaysian experience of the strengthening of the national unity which is based on the concept of "One Malaysia", according to which the perception of the diversity is a ground of bringing the people of different nationalities together, harmonious development and tolerance.
During the first day of the conference various approaches and views on the combating extremism and the development of the “Global movement of moderates” were covered in the speeches by numerous prominent politicians, government officials and scientists from around the globe. The conference continues to work until January 19, 2012.
