KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- The Ukraine government has welcomed the ruling by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) issuing an order for Russia to free three Ukrainian vessels and its 24 Ukrainian sailors onboard.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased that the Tribunal has ordered the provisional measures requested by Ukraine,” Ukrainian Ambassador to Malaysia, Olexander Nechytaylo, said in a statement to Bernama International News Service here.
He said the order sends a strong message to Russia that it cannot violate international laws with impunity.
“We now expect Russia to comply promptly, and in full, with the Tribunal’s order,” he added.
In a ruling on May 25, the ITLOS had ordered Russia to immediately release the three Ukrainian naval vessels – the Berdyansk, the Nikopol, and the Yani Kapu – detained near the Kerch Strait in November 2018, and return them to the custody of Ukraine.
It had also ordered for the 24 servicemen onboard to be released and be allowed to return to Ukraine immediately.
